It’s true. I heard on a radio show that it’s because of really old people who identify themselves as “Negro” because that’s how they grew up. Seems like 2010 is kind of a weird time to add that as an option, though.
The word on the street is that they want to make sure people aren’t like:
“African American? I’m just Negro, ya dig! This jive ass census ain’t for me. Now, where can I get some grits and watermelon?”
Also: why does this post have more comments than any other? Should this be a political blog instead? Yikes! Now I’m having an identity crisis! Spawned by a census identity crisis! Meta!
Well, I know that I was confused when filling out the census because next to “White” it did not clarify by also saying “Caucasian Am.” and “Honkie”. I had to do some Googling, but I finally figured it out.
Nah-ah, this CAN’T be right.
Believe it sister! It’s the truth, Ruth!*
*I am aware your name is Ruth.

Thanks for verifying Helena! And for reading this blog (blush!).
Why would they have African American AND Negro as an option? Aren’t they referring to the same thing? Am I just ignorant? HIII HELENA!

Honkie Helena for the win!
I’m gonna start going by that from now on.
