Ok, so last week was the 20th anniversary of the Vows section in the Times which I periodically read for a good case of schadenfreude.  A lot of the articles seem really boring, or very obviously marriages to maintain or further status quo.  I once remember reading a piece about this young man who married a much older woman, who coincidentally happened to be really rich.  Hmm.

Now here’s the thing about the 20th anniversary of the Vows section: instead of celebrating just the idea of marriage, they went back and interviewed some of the first couples who were featured to see where they are now.  Some were, expectedly, divorced, or worse.  But a great number of the couples have stayed together.  And those couples seem, at least in print to have weathered a lot of storms, and now have a very calm attitude towards their unions.  As a person in his early thirties, I find it really comforting to see glimpses of things to get excited for.  How, even though you can’t control what life gives you, people still figure out a way to make sense of their worlds, whether with kids, or career, or relationships.  All of the couples have really interesting stories, even if on the surface, they seem mundane.
